Discussion about Bruce Broughton - Young Sherlock Holmes (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

There are many iconic scores that make the Top 5 of most film enthusiasts with obvious (and perhaps unimaginative) choices being E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, and Back To The Future with the occasional Morricone or Zimmer thrown in for 'diversity'. But do you notice the trend? One word: Amblin. In the 80s (and a little bit of the 90s) Spielberg ensured that any movie from his production company met the highest quality and often these movies surpassed expectations when it came to scoring. The strangest thing is that while Goldsmith, Williams, and Silvestri went on to become household names Bruce Broughton seems to have been largely forgotten by fans and by studios despite delivering one of the most powerful, epic scores of that decade.Young Sherlock Holmes, my favorite movie, coincidentally, was a big flop upon its release in winter 1985. Even when adjusted for inflation it's pathetic box office could not warrant a sequel and it was immediately abandoned as a potential franchise without really ever finding an audience to appreciate it since. Neither a mainstream or a cult hit, Young Sherlock Holmes still fights to be recognised 31 years after it debuted. There's a lot to like about the movie and make it stand out, but Broughton's score is a beast to behold.I find myself absent-mindedly whistling the main theme several times daily. It's very catchy but also evocative of the shadows, fog, mystery, and gloom of a dark, Victorian London Xmas. The love theme and more sentimental cues perfectly fit the movie's more bittersweet and tragic moments while the Final Duel between Holmes and Eh Tare is a bombastic, action-packed epic in its own right. But the REAL highlight of the score is the Rametep Chant (here titled Waxing Elizabeth) which is most certainly the most epic thing that ever epiced (word of the day!) with its jaw-dropping intensity, building danger, and chilling vocals. It's a tune that has stayed with me ever since I first saw it as a child. The track is a career-high for Bruce Broughton and ought to be performed live in concert by a full orchestra more often. The tracks featured on this original 1985 LP are as follows:1. Main Title (01:58) 2. Solving the Crime (04:53) 3. Library Love/Waxflatter's First Flight (02:23) 4. Pastries & Crypts (05:44) 5. Waxing Elizabeth (03:35) 6. Holmes and Elizabeth - Love Theme (01:54) 7. Ehtar's Escape (04:02) 8. The Final Duel (03:51) 9. Final Farewell (01:53) 10. The Riddles Solved/End Credits (06:25) Total Duration: 00:36:38 At just short of 37 minutes it serves as a "Best of" album rather than the definite score. If you want the gargantuan 2.5+ hours of Bruce Broughton's magnum opus then it is out there, but don't expect to see it on vinyl any time soon.
